Borehamwood 2000 5-2 Under 14 Sumatrans

With Borehamwood an unknown quantity, we started with a sturdy 4-1-4-1 line up but within the opening minutes it was clear that the Tigers were going to be more than a match for our opponents.

Playing into the wind, early Sumatran action put pressure on the Borehamwood defence. An 8 min corner from Robert was headed just over the bar by Craig and a minute later good play from Craig to James was collected by Robert who shot to seal Bengeo’s opening goal.

Borehamwood had a run of success after a break led them to cross and shoot to score in the 12th min and near identical second, 6 minutes later.

A nice run of passes from Tyler to James who diagonally crossed to Tobi on the right who crossed to find Robert who turned and scored the 26th min equaliser raised the Tigers spirit for a few minutes before Borehamwood delivered one of those worryingly high, looping crosses from the left towards goal, which floated with the wind and dropped (as they do!) just inside the crossbar to net their third and within 2 minutes they slotted home a low shot to take the game into half time at 4–2.

Two goals down but with the second half wind advantage, could the Sumatrans pull one of their classic turn-arounds out of the bag?

Unfortunately, the wind decided to drop at half time, but even so early action looked promising, a 10th min ball played out wide right to Ben was crossed to Robert who delivered an on-target header to worry the keeper. A minute later, Calum struck a 20yd shot and soon after Tyler had a side foot opportunity, all thwarted by the keeper.

The task wasn’t helped when a defensive tackle by the Sumatrans in the 21st minute was deemed a penalty which Borehamwood subsequently slotted home to take a 3 goal lead.

Although the battle continued, the Sumatrans couldn’t find the breaks. Despite some promising flow of football, particularly 10 minutes to go, some well placed diagonal play released Tobi on a storming run down the right to shoot over the crossbar, the full time score remained at 5–2. A disappointing score considering the two team’s abilities looked pretty close.

Well done to Calum and the ever-battling Robert for their efforts and Richard who was voted Man of the Match for his continued level of commitment.
