A place in the quarter finals of the Hertfordshire "Tesco" County Cup was the reward for the winners of this match. A repeat fixture two seasons ago, saw Wymondley go through in somewhat controversial circumstances, so what woud be the outcome on this freezing cold Sunday afternoon in Hitchin?
The game begun with both sides attacking and looking to push forward. A few nervous moments were had in the Tigers defensive areas, before some wonderful interplay between the Bengeo midfield and attack saw Callum slot the ball home for Bengeo to take a 1-0 lead. This lasted only a few minutes as Wymondley were handed the lifeline of a penalty decision, which they took and levelled the scores. A real end to end battle ensued until half time as first Bengeo went 2-1 up with a goal from Connor, before the home side netted twice in quick succession to go in 3-2 up at half time.
All looked lost for Bengeo, as mid way through the second half, Wymondley pulled further ahead, and went into the last 10 minutes leading 4-2. They had not legislated for the now legendary fighting spirit of Bengeo Tigers, and with just minutes remaining, first James and then Callum netted to level the scores. The Tigers almost won it with the last kick of the game, but the keeper made a good save from Callum’s shot.
Going into extra time, Bengeo clearly had the upper hand, and their superiority paid off, when Connor got his second of the game to make the score 5-4.
The final whistle blew, and Bengeo were deservedly in the quarter finals.
Everyone played their part in what was a great performance. Well done!
