Puma Christmas Cup

A Christmas get together today for the U9 Siberians at the Puma Christmas Cup in Stevenage.
A great opportunity for the boys and girls to run off the selection boxes on newly laid 3G Astro Pitches.
There were some very good teams in the competition and both Bengeo Teams defended exceptionally well today, leaking very few goals. In-fact the Yellows reached the semi finals after playing, Stevenage Borough, Bushmead Rovers, Wormley Youth, Broadhall Youth and King George, conceding only one goal en route. The highlights were a winning goal by Keaton Weeks in the very last second against Broadhall Youth and a super individual goal by Luc Howford to win the game against Stevenage Borough.
The semi final was played against Austin Arrow Heads and Bengeo took the opening minutes by storm with two near misses. The opposition were strong and tested our defence in reply, but Sam Belshaw and Alphie Marshall were having particularly impressive days. It was end to end and frantic stuff and both teams had chances. However much to the chargrin of Bengeo the referee awarded a free kick to Austen’s with 8 minutes played. The free kick was well taken and Keaton in goal stood little chance 0-1.
With two minutes remaining we continued to play good football and were rewarded when Luke Mccurry netted the equaliser.
Despite another couple of chances and a near miss by Lewis Matthews, the game finished 1-1 and we entered 5 more minutes ’golden goal’.
Both teams had chances to win the game, the opposition struck the outside of our post and we had shots saved. However with the scores all tied, the game was to be decided by a sudden death penalty shoot out. We exited the competition after a 6-5 defeat, however the players displayed great sportsmanship in defeat and proved themselves to be good ambassadors for the Club.
