Under 16 Sumatrans 0-3 Wodson Park United

The usual tight game fell in Wodson’s favour this time. With Sumatrans starting line up of Sam Milne start in goal, Zack, Chris, Calum and Richard in defence with Warren, James Brett, Craig, James Levy and Andrea midfield, Robert as lone striker with Tyler and Jack on the subs bench, both teams started well and, as usual, both pretty evenly matched. Early Wodson pressure was countered with Sumatran efforts including James Brett delivering a useful ball forward to Robert who shot just wide of goal. A 16th min free kick was taken by Chris who’s ball floated over to Robert who volleyed just over the bar and a burst 5 minutes later saw good football played up the left to Robert who cracked a shot which Wodson’s alert keeper did well to push wide of the target. Robert struck again a minute later only to see yet another shot run frustratingly wide of the goal.

After plenty of chances for Bengeo, it was Wodson who actually found the net when, after 24 minutes, some confident passing play up the left ended with a shot placed wide of Sam to net their first.

Soon after, Jack substituted Calum in defence and 5 minutes later Tyler substituted James Brett to keep up the midfield pressure but the last real chance of the first half came after Chris converted a corner which fell to Warren who cracked a shot just over the bar.

The second half started much the same with good solid football from both sides. Sam Rider substituted Sam Milne as goalkeeper after 5 minutes. End to end play continued. At one end, Richard’s nice cross in the 50th minute forced a Sumatran corner which didn’t lead to clear shot on goal, and a couple of minutes later at the other end, Wodson found the net with their second goal at the other when Sumatrans failed to clear to ball after a goalmouth bundle. James Brett returned to the field of play to substitute Tyler in the 55th minute and a tactical swapping of positions in midfield was tried to vary the play but still Bengeo could not catch their opponents score. Some good possession from Sumatrans led Richard to pass to Robert who’s 60th minute shot flew wide, only to see, a minute later, Wodson seal their third goal. Sumatrans just couldn’t find the net; even a penalty awarded to Bengeo 5 minutes later was saved by a fully stretched keeper. A few late substitutions saw Calum on for Chris and, moments later, Tyler on for Robert but by this time there was no way Sumatrans could claw back.

A final good save from Sam kept the final score to 3 – nil in a well fought match from both sides but, despite no shortage of effort, it was just not Sumatran’s week.

Well done to Chris, voted Man of the Match.
